How It Works

This explorer holds a curated dataset of names, each tagged with its cultural origin, a short meaning, a gender lean (girl, boy, or unisex), and a decade-by-decade popularity rank modeled on US Social Security Administration (SSA) baby-name records.

  • Browse & filter: narrow the list by gender, origin, or starting letter, or type any text to match a name or its meaning.
  • Popularity trend: each card shows a sparkline of the name's national rank across the last twelve decades; a lower rank means more popular, so a line that rises on the chart is a name climbing toward the top.
  • Sort: order by current popularity, alphabetically, or by which names are rising or falling fastest between the 1980s and today.
  • Compare: tap the circle on any card to add it to the compare tray; selected names appear side by side with their meanings and an overlaid trend chart.

Everything runs in your browser; no data is sent to a server. Ranks are illustrative samples based on published SSA trends and are meant for exploration, not official statistics.
